POLICY OF APPEASEMENT 2 Policy of Appeasement British appeasement heading for Italy: the British strategy was not reliable. The policy targeted collaboration with Italy aligned with Germany. As the invasion of Abyssinia by Italy would have endangered Britain strategically, diplomatically and economically, the British Government pursued a tangle-headed strategy of appeasement. In January 1935, British, Anthony Eden denounced acquiring a strong stand against Italy. As France was reluctant in the implementation of the sanctions decision against Italy which Britain also decided to do likewise, one would conclude the achievement amounted to an abandonment of the strategy of appeasement. British signed a “Gentleman’s Agreement” with Italy. Both countries agreed to have “freedom of entry into, transit and exit from, through Mediterranean. Mussolini was compelled
