Chapter 9 Notes General Survey: whole body consist of physical appearance, body structure, mobility, behavior Physical appearance: age, sex, skin color, consciousness, facial features and overall appearance Body structure: deformities, stature, nutrition, symmetry, position, body build/contour Mobility: gait, range of motion, and involuntary movement Behavior: personal hygiene, mood and affect, speech, dress Developmental considerations Child: watch how child interacts while accompanying adult (unexpected behaviors from child of adult may be clues to child abuse, mental illness, developmental disability or disorder) Aging Adults: look for posture, appearance and mobility. Towards eighth decade the spinal flexion, angulation features, and redistribution may occur. Gait may be wider base to be able to handle all the changes and keep everything balance) Measure weight – use balance or electronic standing scale (the person should remove heavy outer clothing and shoes)
