The Puritans and Deviance The required reading for today picks up where we left off on Tuesday. Today, we will explore the relationship between Durkheimian deviance theory and the Puritans beginning in about 1636 and continuing until about 1692. Erikson (1966) focuses on how the Puritans clarified their position, and set the Massachusetts Bay apart from England.

Massachusetts Bay Colony Building Boom Erikson (1966) suggests that the Massachusetts Bay colony was expanding with more settlements and a building boom in the 1630s. Recall the point Erikson (1966) made in chapter 1 that changing territorial boundaries are likely to change the kinds of behavior defined as deviant. How does the Antinomian Controversy illustrate this?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
