The Preparation and Analysis of Producing Alum Brandon Letendre* and Jessica Martella Chemistry 111-495 Introduction In this experiment we took aluminum from soda cans and turned it into alum. Through the process of reacting aluminum with different chemicals we were able to yield a composition of alum that could be measured and compared to an actual yield. Using net ionic equations we are able to understand how we produced this substance and why the final product came out as it did. Materials and Methods We measured out .9362 grams of aluminum can pieces on an analytical balance and added 50 mL of 1.4 M KOH in a 250 mL beaker. We used a hot plate and a magnetic stirrer to speed up the reaction process and we vented the hydrogen gas that was produced during the reaction using a funnel connected to a cord that collected the hydrogen gas through suction. Next we filtered the mixture to separate the 2KAl(OH) 4 (aq) from any contamination using an apparatus involving filter paper, a Buchner funnel, and pressure. Once the filtrate had been collected and cooled we slowly added 20 mL of 6.0 M of sulfuric acid while constantly stirring the mixture with a magnetic stirrer. As soon as the mixture was dissolved we filtered it again to remove any solids that did not dissolve.
