Skills outline for Postoperative and Convalescent Phase Recovery: The second phase of recovery is the postoperative convalescent period. This is the period when the nursing roles focus on preparation for care as the period when the nursing roles focus on preparation for care in the home or an extends care environment. During this period the patient is discharged from the postanesthesia care unit to the time he or she is discharged from the inpatient hospital. Always remember to asses vital signs at least every 4 hours or as ordered. Some equipment that you may need: Postoperative bed Stethoscope IV fluid poles and infusion pumps a needed Emesis basin Washcloth and towels Waterproof pads Equipment for oral hygiene
