MAE 336: Heat Transfer - Spring 2018 Homework #6: Due Monday 4/23/18 at 11:59pm Please follow the solution steps outlined in the syllabus. 1. A steel tube ( k = 60 W m · K ) of inner and outer diameters D i = 24 mm and D o = 30 mm , respectively, is used to transfer heat from hot gases flowing over the tube ( h h = 250 W m 2 · K ) to cold water flowing through the tube ( h c = 9000 W m 2 · K ). (a) An overall surface efficiency exists for both the hot surface ( η o,h ) and cold surface ( η o,c ). Without any fins on the pipe, what are the values of η o,h and η o,c ? (b) Find the hot-side overall heat transfer coefficient U h without fins. Also show U c = 298 W m 2 · K . Note* ( U h A h ) - 1 = ( U c A c ) - 1 so you can define the overall heat transfer coefficient based on either surface , but then this surface. The final units on U are the same as h , [ U ] = W m 2 · K . (c) To enhance heat transfer, 16 straight rectangular fins made of the same material are equally spaced around the outer circumference of the tube. The t = 1 mm

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
