Clinical Question and Problem Statement 2 Clinical Question In patients with short-term indwelling urinary catheters (IUC), what is the effect of infection prevention on prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs)? Problem Statement Indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are used when patients have blocked urine flow due to kidney stones, blood clots, or enlargement of the prostate gland; surgery within the genitourinary tract; injury to the nerves of the bladder; spinal cord injury; medications that cause urinary retention; the need for accurate intake and output in critical patients; the presence of a stage 3 or 4 pressure ulcer that doesn’t heal due to continual urine incontinence; or end of life comfort (UroToday, n.d.). IUCs are a great asset to the healthcare profession, but can cause complications if not cared for correctly. IUCs “are the leading cause of healthcare-associated urinary tract infections (UTIs)” (Stephens, 2017). Of all the UTIs developed within the hospital, about 75% are related
