Rhetorical Analysis Essay Outline Abby Anderson, ENG 106-02, Reinert, 1 September 2017 Thesis: In the “Student Debt” episode of Last Week Tonight , John Oliver explains why students find themselves in so much debt and where their money may be going to in a humorous yet informative fashion, so as to appeal to his audience’s senses of logos and pathos as well as prove his stance that student debt amounts have spiraled out of control to be truthful. Reason 1: State funding for higher education has been slashed 23% over the last decade, so in order to compensate, institutions have been required to raise their tuition rates by 28%, causing students to need to take out ever-growing loan amounts. Concrete Example: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, May 1, 2014.
