BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEM TRENDS Important things I have learnt Throughout the duration of this course we focused on managing business information systems. The most important thing I have learned is that BIS are vital for the efficient running of businesses in today’s technologized world. These systems consist of various types of data resources, data processing and storage systems; each of which may be used at different levels in an organization. For instance, the HRM system ensures that employees are equipped and effective in accomplishing the goals of the organization (Butler, J. E., Ferris, G. R., & Napier, N.K., 1991). Another lesson I learnt is that as technologies advances and businesses grow, adapting a process oriented model can help businesses in keeping their integrity and reputation. Process-based systems allow businesses to engage in a more interdisciplinary strategy to guarantee the success of specific processes (Process Orientation, 2005) and also to meet the needs of the customer. Therefore adapting such system would pave the way for team building which facilitates innovative thinking. Further data and information are precious and in most cases makes up the core of the business along with human and other resources. As such BIS must cater for the protection of data since at any time disaster can strike. This is where a business continuity plan comes in because, such a plan make certain that an organization’s critical business functions continue to operate or recover quickly despite serious incidents (Robinson, Narin & Elleman, 2014). Of all the lessons I learnt one of the thing that surprise me the most is the fact that it possible for organizations to have an up to date IT department and not use it efficiently to its full capacity. West Jet faced a similar situation because after her assessment, Smith concluded that the IT structure of her new company was acceptable; however, it was not being used appropriately for the type of business they were leading (Munro and Khan, 2013). Since IT operations are vital in leading organizations to success, it is paramount to align IT operations with cooperate goals.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
