BIOL 121- Lecture 7 Metabolism Metabolism- complicated network of interrelated biochemical pathways in cells 1. Catabolic- break down nutrients in order to make energy and break down critical building blocks for biosynthetic pathways 2. Anabolic- take products and makes complex macromolecules (proteins, lipids, nucleic acids) 1. Remember because anabolic steroids (build muscles and macromolecules) Glycolysis, TCA cycle, oxidative phosphorylation Five broad stages (look at slide) Can occur with and without oxygen o Without is fermentation o Pyruvate oxidized to form COA o Acetyl COA enters TCA oxidized to CO2 o Electron transport (energy from previous) transports electrons to drive ATP synthesis *prokaryotes: don’t have mitochondria Look at part about cytoplasm Sugar- glucose Has two chemical forms (circular and linear) C6h12o6+6O2------------ 6CO2+ 6H2O Glucose is a good source of energy Glycolysis Results in two pyruvates Majority of organisms complete this process 10 individual steps Tips

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
