Despite the fact that the film is based on the 1836 Battle of the Alamo story it can, however, be articulated that Wayne was really making a statement about the United States in 1960. Sam Houston was the leader of the forces of Texas independence while the opposing Mexican forces, were led by General Santa Anna, and were indeed stronger, armed and trained. Even though the Mexicans won the war, they did not honor General Santa Anna who led the attack on Alamo. He is considered to be among the reviled personalities in Mexico, in terms of despots and exploiters. As noted, Santa Ann had been a president 11 times and has participated in different tragic occurrences of that era. While Mexico had been going periodic revision, some parts of it did not change.
