In the United States, income determines people’s ability to access health care and their burden of disease. Poverty prevents limits people’s access to health care and they often experience a higher number of health disparities. “Children’s socioeconomic status is mostly assessed by parental characteristics: education, occupation, and income…low income children have higher rates of mortality, higher rates of disability, and are more likely to have multiple conditions…[and] more likely to be in fair or poor health compared with other children” (Gentry, 2016, para 7). Childhood diseases do not just affect the person during childhood, but it also affects them in adulthood. Health prevention is vital because health disparities experienced during childhood experience poorer health, lower socioeconomic status, and lower levels of education as adults (Gentry, 2016, para 11). .
