Iron Deficiency Anemia - Most common chronic hematological disorders o Iron is present in all RBC as heme in hemoglobin and in stored form o Heme accounts for two thirds of body’s iron - Cause: inadequate dietary intake, blood loss, hemolysis o Malabsorption: 5-10% of ingested iron is absorbed in duodenum o Causes of hemolysis: immune reactions, infection, medication, toxins and poisons, hemodialysis, bypass machine - Risk factors: premenopausal, pregnant, elder, Signs and Symptoms: Fatigue, pallor (most common), glossitis (inflammatory depapilation, - Tongue is rigid, reduced saliva (norm flora infection), chelitis (lip inflammation - Some pt are asymptomatic and may recognize that they had fatigue, weakness, exercise intolerance or PICA (ice) Labs - CBC; hgb, hvt, MCV, MCH, MCHC, platelets - Reticulocytes: RBC teenagers - Serum iron, TIBC, ferritin (iron studies)
