Reproduction Sexual reproduction: reproduction involving the union or fusion of a male and a female gamete. The offspring is genetically different from the parents. Asexual reproduction : a type of reproduction where an organism replicates itself, by budding or dividing, without the involvement of other organisms. The offspring is genetically identical to the parent. Why does a female fish lay thousands of eggs to guarantee reproduction while a bear gives birth to one or two cubs to accomplish the same thing? fish are called r strategists (lowercase ‘r’) – they make lots of babies in the hopes that a few will survive to exploit available resources.
