Thesis- the evident downturn of politics, the ongoing debates over the morality of slavery, the desire to become a developed nation, and advancements in technology, altogether have the potential to largely impact the new republic in a negative way. 1. Eclipse- a. still at the beginning, when independence was first won. Everyone was in awe of what was going on. b. People were not acting scared like they would with other phenomena. Because people know what this is, theyre educated on this phenomena so they know that its just science. Many people preferred superstitious explanations though. c. People felt anticlimactic because the eclipse was not as dramatic as they intended. They didn’t die and the earth was not completely dark. Religious conspiracies tried to find a reasoning behind “ why they didn’t die”. d. People blamed the media for exploiting their weak minds with the idea that something huge was gonna occur. e. Politicians were going to take a “break” until the darkness dissipated but since there was really no darkness, they weren’t able to. f. Some people didn’t even care for the eclipse. They continued along with their day as if it were nothing special (ice skating). g. Feb 12, a painting of ice skaters 2. Slavery and Abolition- a. Nat Turner- in Virginia. Claimed to have seen a vision because of the eclipse. About the holy spirit. He was a slave. He said he had a mission that would begin on independence day. Saw the same vision again on Aug. 13. i. ^ his plan was starting to spread ( Southampton County, Virginia). Slaves outnumbered slave-owners. White men could not believe that slaves wanted to live freely. They ignorantly believed that the slaves were happy with the life they had because they didn’t know any better one. They thought that slavery was right and that they were good masters. ii. Nat turner killed his master aka; Joseph Travis. Killed him by driving a blunt hatchet against his head, followed by the deathblow from an ax, even though he was one of the “better” masters there were. His wife was also killed and 4+ people including an infant. iii. No body knew how many slaves were in on this plan. It could be 4 or 400. “ rebels, banditti, brigands, villains, wretches, monsters, etc. anything, but, men. At first it was said that it was 250 runaways. It was believed that the cause was a religious one. iv. The plan was said to extend all the way to North Carolina, and was started by a white man…. v. Those were the 2 versions of the story. Some people thought of them as “runaways” so the problem is from outside. Others said it was “slaves”,
meaning the attacks were from within. But in reality, the amount of people involved was inflated. vi. This allowed people to have someone to blame but themselves about their need for food and clothing.
