Read a section in the book and do active reflections; what did I just read? How does it relate to
what we are learning?
Hartman’s Review
What is our role as a nurse?
Intake interview – initial health assessments
Patient comes in and says: my brother has cystic fibrosis, what are the chances of my baby
having this? (given data; mundalian grid -> brother has it assume mother is a carrier)
Menstrual cycle – need to have a good understanding of this; basis of pregnancy
Corpus luteum –
What happens in the first part of the cycle – LH (2
nd
hormone; spike occurs triggering ovulation
24hrs after) and FSH (stimulates the follicle)
Once the ova is released, what happens to the follicle? Starts corpus luteum, secreting
estrogen/progesterone (supporting the pregnancy by making lining thick and juicy)
From the ovaries to the endometrium which hormone is in the beginning? Estrogen -> lining of
the uterus; higher in the beginning of the cycle
Progesterone – thicker/juicier
Ovulation – how long does the egg survive – 24-48hrs; if no sperm around, no fertilization;
corpus luteum shuts down 10-14 days (ischemia in the uterine lining; girl starts her period
shortly)
