These films are helpful to use as a tool to better understand groupprocess and interpersonal skills. A group can either be a strong functioning one like the men inApollo 13 or a newly formed group as the men in 12 Angry Men. As per Tuckman (1965)behaviors can generate the stages of group development, which are forming, storming, andnorming, and performing, and at a later time, Tuckman added a fifth stage which was adjourning(Tuckman & Jensen, 1977).Not every group will go through each stage. A group can experiencemultiple stages at once or even one stage multiple times. These films portrayed each stage ofdevelopment differently throughout the film and both groups of men illustrated the stages well.During the forming stage, the group will get to know each other. This stage clarifies theintentions of the group and their goal. Since the men from Apollo 13 knew each other, the groupdidn’t dedicate much time to forming, while the group from 12 Angry Men were all strangers,who needed to come together to reach a verdict.
