Michael Yoo April 4, 2018 Writing Assignment 4: Jean Paul Sartre In Jean Paul Sartre’s essay, Existentialism , Sartre seeks to defend his existentialist argument that existence precedes essence: man is nothing more, nothing less, than what he makes of himself. “Life has no meaning a priori . Before you come alive, life is nothing; it’s up to you to give it a meaning, and value is nothing else but the meaning that you choose” (Sartre 365). We are what we are because of what we do; things are valuable because we choose them. Nothing outside of ourselves defines what human nature is, and thus we are left to define it for ourselves since there is no God to design man. This seems to be nothing more than the attempt to define a coherent set of principles that arise from an atheistic position. It should be remembered, that Sartre’s existential atheism is concerned with protecting human freedom and hence human dignity, legitimate concerns indeed that should not be taken lightly. This concern leads him to his ensuing position, which rests, for validation, upon a few
