Synthesis of Acetaminophen from p-Aminophenol and Acetic Anhydride Brittney Jordan Alexis Bolson Pritha Bisarad TH 11:40-2:30 E-307 4/9/2018 Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize, isolate and purify Acetaminophen from p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride. Then to characterize this product using melting point and IR spectroscopy. Reflux was used to allow the p-aminophenol to dissolve in the anhydride. In order to eliminate any impurities, the product was recrystallized. The percent yield was 6.57% and the melting point was 169.5-171.4 . 1

Introduction The purpose of this is experiment was to synthesize Acetaminophen from p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride using one of many controlled heating techniques called reflux. The product was cooled and the crude product was isolated. The crude product was purified using recrystallization, a method used to dissolve both impurities and a desired product in a minimum volume solvent. The impurities are removed using filtration and the desired compound is left behind. In this experiment a 50:50 mixture of hot water and methanol are used to recrystallize the compound leaving a pure product. The pure product was identified and characterized using IR spectroscopy and melting point range respectively. Figure 1. Pure Acetaminophen Figure 2.
