Space Race The long Space Race competition between the United States and Russia was exciting for Americans, but devastating for the Soviet Union. The Space Race started when the Soviet Union launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik into space to orbit around the earth on October 4, 1957. This caused people all over the world to panic uncontrollably because the people were not sure what was going on and what was going to happen. The long term effect of The Space Race had on us was magnificent. The Space Race had huge impact on society and technology. The Space Race led to a joint United States - Soviet Union mission in July 1976, and allowed America to gain technological superiority when America sent the first astronaut to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962 and launched Apollo 11, which put the first man on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Russia showed that the Soviet Union, which is also them had enough rockets of sufficient power to launch satellites and may soon be able to launch missiles as weapons. The United States was concerned that this could start a war. Americans were really excited about the small chance to travel into space. [Most people did not know a lot about space or space technology except for what the people saw on television and from what they saw on television and believed that were in scary science fiction movies about the 1950s and 60s and people believed that going into space was dangerous.] (Space Race and the Cold War) The Space Race had a huge impact on technology because The Space Race showed how powerful Technology is and that changed everybody’s view of Technology. The Space Race also had a huge impact on society because it changed the world’s perspective about
America’s national identity.The Space Race showed that there is a lot more than meets the eye.
