Xiaofei Nie ID:111138810 Tan Mother Tongue 1. The essay mentioned that the writing and speaking is complement each other, or they are the basement of each other. Tan use all the Englishes she grew up with in the “Mother Tongue”, such as the simple English that she spoke to her mother; the broken English that her mother used with her: the watered down English her translation of her mother’s Chinese; and the perfect English she used as well. The reason why she used these Englishes because using these Englishes can reveal her mother’s intent, passion, imagery, the rhythms of speech, the nature of thoughts that tests can never does. 2. The Englishes spoken by Tan and her mother is imperfect, or we can say it’s “broken” and “limited”, sometimes, we may think that use these kind of Englishes cannot be easy to communicate or understand, however, Tan grew up in these Englishes, she already got used to use these Englishes they spoken. Also, they can get some information about personalities, intelligence from theses Englishes they spoken. 3. The essay mentioned that when Tan communicate with her family or intimate relationships, she will use the language she grew up with, or we can say the informal language, the English her mother spoken, like the “broken English” or imperfect English. However, when she uses language for public or a social people, she will use a totally different kind of English that she had never used with her mother. She will use a more formal and precise language, or the perfect English without grammatical mistake.
