The music starts again and she becomes transfixed by therhythm. “I always try to put my whole self into the dance. The feeling is just as important asgetting the moves.” At the age of 18, Sarah Banno has learned, led, choreographed, and taughtdance to people of all ages. After graduating high school in June, she moved away from RhodeIsland and became a resident of New York City, America’s dance capital.Short red hair flops in front of her eyes as she effortlessly moves through combinationsthat took her hours to master. In an average week, Sarah attends at least five dance classes ofvarying styles. Unlike her previous dance classes in which she was the best and one of the oldest, she’s usually the youngest and least experienced student. She remembers her first day of class in her new environment. Looking around at olderunfamiliar faces was intimidating. “I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what level I was at yet.”
