AbstractThis paper examines the importance of a Professional Development Plan (PDP) as a guide toachieve set goals. It outlines the set goals, motivation, steps and timeframe to achieve success. Itexplains how our personal strengths and weaknesses contribute to the development of a PDPrelevant to the set goals. It also examines the personal and professional set goals - to become aconsultant, to become a public speaker and to meet successful online business owners with a timeframe of the actualization of these goals. These can be achieved by creating a Personal LearningNetwork (PLN) and the effective use of social media tools for success and publicity.Professional Development Plan2
We need to make plans to guide our lives and achieve our goals, priortize the mostimportant goals and design steps to achieve them. We live in a world of diverse culture wheredifferent people come together from different works of life to discover and learn from each otherfor personal and professional development. Every day has its own challenges. We start the daywithout knowing what will become of us at the end of the day. We sometimes start a path –personal or professional, without any form of assurance for completion. Uncertainties of life makeus detour as the years pass by. There are goals which I developed at the beginning of the course –to become a consultant, to become a public speaker and to meet successful online businessowners. Research suggests that participation in organized activities leads to personal and socialdevelopment during adolescence (Hansen et al. 2003; Larson 2000; Mohoney et al. 2005). PDP isa structured process of creating activities to enhance an individuals career and personaldevelopment. There are goals to be set to achieve success in the long run, but there has to be aconscious effort to factor in an individual’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats(SWOT). “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” (Durant,1991). Active involvement in school-based extracurricular activities enhance the development ofsocial skills, expanded social network and support (Eccles & Templeton, 2002; Holland & Andre,1987; Patrick et al, 1999). Building a Personal Learning Network (PLN) on social media is ameans of associating with people from different works of life. This creates a healthy relationshipwith an opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. The four model drivers – Energy,Focus, Speed, and Challenge is a self – assessment tool that helps to identify leadership levels andidentify areas of improvement (Casse, 2014). It’s also important to complete a personal SWOTanalysis to identify areas for improvement. It helps to give a better understanding of my strengths3
and manage my weaknesses, as well as uncover opportunities for growth and eliminate threatsthat could deter my success (Shaw, 2017).
