General Purpose: To Persuade Specific Purpose: The audience will gain a better understanding of the ineffectiveness of gun control laws. Central Idea: Simply having guns does not guarantee high gun crime rates, in fact banning them can do more damage then good. There are several factors that can be assessed at the governmental level as well as practices at the community and even family level that can greatly lower gun crime rates without getting rid of guns. Is gun control really the answer? INTRODUCTION GAIN ATTENTION: Identify the problem Attention-Getter: While America is the number one owner of guns, did you know that Switzerland and Finland, numbers one and two respectively have much lower gun crime rates? Preview: I can explain to you in a few short minutes why strict gun control laws may not be the answer to changing that. Relevance: Gun control is important to any member of society with an increasingly dangerous world. Credibility: I have spent a lot of time with guns as a member of the military and as a law enforcement officer. I understand how to safely own a gun and lower the risk to others. Position Statement: I believe that gun control laws should be changed entirely to be made more lenient, provided a few changes be made. This is my proposition to rebuild America’s gun control laws and make the country safer. BODY NEED: Explanation of the problem Statement: Gun control laws try to make the country safer but may be making life even more dangerous.
