Matilde Eckford A Force to Be Reckoned With 1981 Poem In Adrienne Rich’s “Storm Warnings,” she sets up the scene of an incoming storm. She foreshadows the destruction to come and the relative lack of protection she has to protect herself. She talks about the technology she has to predict and protect herself from the storm. While Adrienne Rich’s “Storm Warnings,” might seem to be purely about a storm, the language used actually conveys the destruction nature holds and the lack of ability humans have to stop that destruction. “Storm Warnings,” uses visual imagery, figurative language, and diction to set up the scenery of the poem. The diction includes words such as “winds,” “sky,” “air,” “weather,” “time,” “season,” and “regions.” These words help set up the focus of the poem, nature and a storm. Rich also uses figurative language to describe nature. She uses “grey unrest,” (line 4) “a silent core of waiting,” (line 9) and “secret currents of the undiscerned,” (line 11). The metaphors “grey unrest” and “secret currents of the undiscerned” describe the impending storm. The words “unrest” and “undiscerned” portray a sense of foreboding.
