06/12/2007 01:26:00 Modernity- what are the sources of it is America different Zionism What is jew A jew can be many things But the real thing is the rich history no matter if they are really religious- share  the same past- no other religion holods REVIEW- modern period primarily 2 main essays- get to choose 1) compare or contrast something between premodern and modern- compare contrast anti-Semitism premodern to modern 2) Specifically within modern age Shorter answer- concentrated on modern period what in Zionist is ahistorical is premised on any ideological movement emphasizes and underemphasizes certain things- exaggerate idea of antisemtisim *an aspect of Zionism about saving jews- certain version of jewish history which emphasizes sail of aron article- criticizes most jewish histories as being lachrymose-  emphasize again and again the bad stuff, the persecutions and danger that  jews were in – history gets distorted-  attempt in modern contemporary study of jewish history, attempt to restore a  balance (jews living in peace and harmony) - ideology of Zionism is  concerned about attaining its goals and not this balance-

Zionism – restoration of jewish autonomy- critique of jewish existence that jews  for too long have not had control of their own affairs, have been subject to other powers  instead of being controlled by their own fate- give jews power with Zionism and argues  that JEWS haven’t had power (antisemtism) and that there was a time when Jews had  the power and then lost it- there was a time when jews lived in the land of Israel and  were in control, and therefore modern goal is to restore and recreate what was lost *overemphasizes both the autonomy that jews had in the ancient world *ideological intent of the bible was to celebrate the jewish possession of the land  and the idea of a jewish political power and commonwealth in the bible * ideology of Zionism is a distortion – one of the major Zionist leaders David  Bengorian- used the Hebrew bible as a principle proof text for the Zionist movement- it  worked and there is now a state of Israel- Zionism succeeded  but some of the  problematics come out of flaws in the Zionist movement- conflict bw palestinains and  jews may be related to the failure of Zionism to realistically address the jewish state of  Israel and the Palestinians- majority of early Zionists simply ignored existence of arabs-  *premodern anti-Semitism- exile from Babylon and Spain- made them wear hats- *St. Augustine   said to let jews live- modern antisemtism turned to physical  violence-
