Financial statements of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. are presented in Appendix E. Instructions for accessing and using the complete annual reports of Amazon and Wal-Mart, including the notes to the financial statements, are also provided in Appendices D and E, respectively. Instructions (a) Based on the information contained in these financial statements, determine each of the following for each company: (1) Cash and cash equivalents balance at December 31, 2013, for Amazon and at January 31, 2014, for Wal-Mart. Cash and cash equivalents for Amazon, 12/31/2013 = $8,658 million. Cash and cash equivalents for Wal-Mart, 11/31/2014 = $7,281 million. (2) Increase (decrease) in cash and cash equivalents from 2012 to 2013. Amazon had a $574 Million increase. Wal-Mart had a $500 million increase. (3) Net cash provided by operating activities during the year ended December 31, 2013, for Amazon and January 31, 2014, for Wal-Mart from statement of cash flows.
