Assignment 1.2 – Conflicting Viewpoints Essay
Introduction
Gun Control is an issue that has been in the news heavily for the last few weeks. Just two
weeks ago, a 19 year was armed with a AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle with a lot a of
magazines. He was able to purchase this weapon from a gun store when he was just 18 years of
age. I don’t understand how that’s even legal. What credentials did he present to the store
personal? Why was a teenager allowed to walk into a gun shop to purchase a weapon? Those are
just a few questions I have, but they make it hard for you to buy a handgun. A handgun can be
regulated but the larger weapons can’t. I feel as though, if you need a license to buy a handgun
why shouldn’t that be a requirement for all and any weapons. Honestly high-powered weapons
should be banned or at least kept out of the hands of kids, people with mental health issues and
criminals. This kid sadly left 17 innocent individuals dead, and several injured. I would like to
see change soon before we have this problem again, we are losing to many people to this
senseless act of violence.
My supporting premises
The three supporting premises I chose were, (1) More gun control laws would reduce
gun deaths. [Pro 2], (2) High-capacity magazines should be banned because they too often turn
murder into mass murder. {Pro 3], (3) A majority of adults, including gun owners, support
common sense gun control such as background checks, bans on assault weapons, and bans on
high-capacity magazines. [Pro 8].
The Federal Firearms Act of 1938 made it illegal to sell guns to certain people, which
included convicted felons. It also required federal firearms licensees to maintain customer
