Lange Reaction Paper Lange Article Summary In this article, Lange discusses W.E.B. DuBois and his role in advancing Afro-American studies and introducing African American history to American anthropology. DuBois was the first to establish a scientific approach to studying Afro-America, publishing a collection of studies that amount to the first ethnography of Afro-Americans. Lange states that these studies filled a tremendous gap in American anthropology created by its early white supremacist promoters (136). DuBois examined Afro-American culture through historical, economic, social, political, geographical, ideological, and literary perspectives, as well as studying societal issues and case studies within Afro-American communities. Lange believes that without DuBois’s efforts, Afro-American studies would have been postponed for at least two more decades, causing setbacks to significant development within the black community.
