The financial statistics cost wise annually is about 320 billion dollars in health care expenditures and related expenses. What remains a constant is the fact that both of these diseases are the most preventable. The leading modifiable risk factors include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking cigarettes, obesity, unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Over time these risk factors cause permanent changes to vasculature and increases the likelihood of heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke. Current data Epidemiology and Demographic Information The current data baseline was done nationally in 2007 and has been revised yearly. As of 2018 the numbers for coronary artery disease are continuing to decline so the efforts by the healthy people initiative. In 2015 which was the latest year recorded was 97.2 measured in 100 thousandths. The target for the healthy people initiative was below 103, initial baseline numbers were at 129. The efforts to reduce deaths caused by stroke have not faired so well but the target seems to be on track with the projection. The initial baseline numbers deaths caused by stroke was 43.5 in 2007. The target for healthy people 2020 number is 34.8. The latest information recorded in 2015 was 37.6. Goals and Objectives for Healthy People 2020 The goals or the healthy people 2020 initiatives are measured yearly. The attack on closing the gap between availability of healthcare to all without disparities seems to have HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 HEART DISEASE AND STROKE 3 come to a halt. Public programs that have been in place to penalize those who do not have health insurance have not encouraged the general public to sign up for insurance. They instead opted for the government to remove the fees from income tax refunds. Program Plan and Strategies for Implementation The other prongs on the attack include more efficient streamlined primary care and better training for cardiology and neurology specialists to include using the up to date tools such as neuroendovascular to mechanically remove clot-causing strokes. No national system exists to collect data on how often cardiovascular events occur or recur, or how often they result in disability and death. Similarly, there is inadequate tracking of quality indicators across the continuum of care, from risk factor prevention through treatment of acute events to post-hospitalization and rehabilitation. New measures and tools are needed to monitor improvement in cardiovascular health and cardiovascular care over the next decade.
