Lecture Outline March 17, 2008 Cardiovascular System II Cardiac Cycle events of a complete heart beat Phase 1. ventricular filling A. ventricular diastole/filling from venous return B. atrial systole       end-diastolic volume (EDV) Phase 2: isovolumic ventricular contraction  begin ventricular systole  increased ventricular pressure, AV valves close, 1st heart sound  not enough pressure to open semilunar valves Phase 3: ventricular systole   ventricular pressure exceeds that in pulmonary trunk and aorta  ejection phase   stroke volume (SV) Phase 4: isovolumic ventricular relaxation  2nd heart sound as semilunar valves close  all valves closed  pressure in ventricles falls end-systolic volume, ESV Biology 141: Physiology 1
