NURSING THEORIESLINDSAY HUFFMANKG8 03-20-18: CONCEPTS AND THEORIES IN NURSINGASPEN UNIVERSITYKAREN GRUENINGER, MSN, RN, CNN05/13/2018
NIGHTINGALE’S THEORY ENVIRONMENTAL THEORYCONSIDERED THE MOTHER OF MODERN DAY NURSING (SMITH & PARKER, 2015)NIGHTINGALE’S THEORY FOCUSES ON THE PATIENT’S ENVIRONMENT (SMITH & PARKER, 2015)THERE ARE SEVEN ASSUMPTIONS IN NIGHTINGALE’S THEORY IN ORDER FOR PATIENT’S TO REACH THEIR HEALTH GOALS (SMITH & PARKER, 2015)
NIGHTINGALE’S ASSUMPTIONSTHE FIRST ASSUMPTION IS NATURAL LAWSTHE SECOND ASSUMPTION IS THAT MANKIND CAN ACHIEVE PERFECTIONTHE THIRD ASSUMPTION IS THAT NURSING IS A CALLINGTHE FOURTH IS THAT NURSING IS AN ART AND SCIENCE (SMITH & PARKER, 2015)THE FIFTH IS THAT NURSING IS ACHIEVED THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL ALTERATIONTHE SIXTH IS THAT NURSING REQUIRES A SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL BASETHE SEVENTH ASSUMPTION IS THAT NURSING IS DISTINCT AND SEPARATE FROM MEDICINE (SMITH & PARKER, 2015)
APPLICATION AND OUTCOMESHOSPITALS THINK ABOUT A PATIENT’S ENVIRONMENT AND TRY TO PROVIDE ONE CONDUCIVE TO HEALING. AN EXAMPLE IS THAT MOST HOSPITAL ROOMS HAVE WINDOWS TO LET SUNLIGHT IN. EVERY HOSPITAL ROOM IS CLEANED EVERY DAY WITH SPECIAL CLEANERS TO DECREASE BUGS AND BACTERIA THAT CAN EFFECT PATIENT HEALTHNURSES CAN WORK WITH DIETICIANS IN ORDER TO ENSURE PATIENTS ARE RECEIVING ADEQUATE NUTRITIONPATIENT WILL NOT ACQUIRE A HOSPITAL INFECTIONPATIENT’S CAN MEET THEIR OWN NEEDSPATIENT’S WILL HEAL FASTER IN AN ENVIRONMENT SUITED TO MEET THEIR NEEDS
BENEFITS AND BARRIERSNURSES HAVE A MORE FOCUSED TASK WHEN CARING FOR PATIENTSTHE NURSING PROFESSION IS SEEN IN A LIGHT SEPARATE FROM MEDICINENURSING EDUCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT AND NURSES CAN CONTINUE EDUCATION IF THEY WOULD LIKEONE BARRIER WOULD BE A LACK OF COMPLEMENTARY PHILOSOPHY. OVERCOMING THE BARRIER WOULD BE TO FIND ANOTHER THEORY THAT COMPLEMENTS NIGHTINGALE’S THEORYANOTHER BARRIER WOULD BE NOT BEING ABLE TO APPLY THE THEORY TO UNIQUE PATIENT SITUATIONS. A WAY TO OVERCOME THE BARRIER WOULD BE TO KNOW HOW TO INCORPORATE OTHER THEORIES TO EACH PATIENT SITUATION.
PEPLAU’S THEORYTHE FIRST PHASE IN PEPLAU’S THEORY IS THE ORIENTATION PHASE. THIS PHASE IS NURSE DIRECTED AND MAKES SURE THAT THE PATIENT IS INVOLVED IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS. PHASE II OF PEPLAU’S THEORY IS THE WORKING PHASE (SMITH & PARKER, 2015). THIS PHASE HAS THE PATIENT AS FEELING AS THOUGH THEY CAN HELP IMPROVE THEIR HEALTHTHE NURSE DURING THIS PHASE BEGINS TO IDENTIFY THE CURRENT HEALTH ISSUES (SMITH & PARKER, 2015).PHASE III OF PEPLAU’S THEORY IS THE RESOLUTION PHASE (SMITH & PARKER, 2015).THIS PHASE CONSISTS OF THE PATIENT TAKING CONTROL OVER THEIR OWN HEALTHCARE AND RELYING LESS ON THE NURSE THE PATIENT WILL NOT NEED TO RELY ON THE HOSPITAL AND THE NURSE TO GET WHAT THEY NEED IN ORDER TO BE HEALTHY
APPLICATION AND OUTCOMESTHIS THEORY CAN BE APPLIED IN HOME HEALTH BY ESTABLISHING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PATIENT
