Connor Blair David Mongomerie Persuasive Speech - Vegetarianism Preparation Outline: Meat Eating Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience that becoming a vegetarian can lead to drastically improved personal health. Central Idea : To persuade my audience that meat directly leads to a decreased personal well being, there is no good argument for eating meat, humans anatomically aren’t meat eaters, and becoming a vegetarian is easy. Intro : I. Last year in an introductory Philosophy course I studied the effect the meat portion of our diets, had on us, our neighbors, and on our world. II. I was the last person I thought would become a vegetarian. However, after I understood some of the affects my dieting habits had not only on the world, but more importantly…myself, I realized it was time for a change. III. Today, I will focus on the personal health element of the vegetarianism argument. Because a diet containing meat leads to a lesser overall health, humans, biologically, aren’t meat eaters, and because becoming a vegetarian comes with little or no sacrifice, it is our ethical obligation to ourselves to become vegetarians. IV. My argument is based on a vegetarian diet, which is what I follow. I eat no meat, not even seafood. However, I do eat eggs and dairy products. Transition: To begin, let’s look at the disease meat causes us. Body : I. Our meat eating ways lead to several severe health problems. Meat eating is clinically linked to high cancer rates and higher cholesterol. Also, meat today contains many antibiotics and pesticides. A) Meat Eating causes cancer. 1. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research our meat eating habits prevent us from eating cancer preventing fruits and vegetables. 2. In fact, in a recent study involving 50,000 vegetarians every type of cancer occurred at significantly lower rates than a group matched on age and sex. The study showed that their life expectancy is longer and that they had 53% less risk of dying from cancer.
