INTRO “Eliminative materialism is the thesis that our commonsense conception of psychological phenomena constitutes a radically false theory, a theory so fundamentally defective that both the principles and the ontology of that theory will eventually be displaced ….,” What does Churchland mean? I. First, he is claiming that Folk Psychology is a thesis. a. FP is able to bring together many of the most important topics in the philosophy of the mind i. Behavior prediction, semantics of mental predicates, action theory, the problem of other minds, the intentionality of mental states, and the mind body problem (Churchland explains why each of these are important and how FP “solves” them. ii. FP makes generalizations ("laws") over a broad range of events, organizes mental events taxonomically, has empirical consequences which are subject to verification or falsification, and makes predictions about the future. b. FP, like all theories, is a hypothesis, i. But, it is accurate enough to be considered a theory. ii. Churchland compares the accuracy of FP with other cognitive theories. II.
