Foodborne Disease Policy Foodborne illness is a prevalent public health problem caused by consumption of contaminated food. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in every six Americans gets foodborne illness every year. 128,000 of the 48 million people who get foodborne disease are hospitalized and 3000 of them die annually. It is a costly but preventable health problem. Food contamination occurs during production, processing, preparation, and handling. Public health department play a crucial role of disease surveillance which helps keep track of foodborne disease. The high incidence rate points to an underlying problem at the various levels starting from the government to individual people. Policy Solutions Foodborne illness is indicative of need to address the failures in government and individual conduct of people.
