Proposal On August 4, 1964 three civil rights workers were found dead, buried in a dam in Neshoba County, Mississippi. My research project will be on this topic. This tragedy sparked an interest when I learned about it last year. The main reason I took such an interest in this topic is because my father and grandfather lived in Neshoba County in 1964. My grandfather was actually part of the search party which looked for the three workers. His firsthand accounts and amazing storytelling abilities will make for an excellent interview. My grandfather also has a good memory so getting accurate information will not be a problem. Aside from my grandfather research should not be difficult. There are volumes written, and a 1988 movie, “Mississippi Burning,” made, on this controversial Supreme Court case. My research and paper will focus not so much on the facts of the killings, but on the atmosphere of the Deep South and rural Mississippi in the summer of 1964, dubbed Freedom Summer.
