Alexus Harris March 29, 2018Maya AngelouAmerican poet, memoirist, and actressMaya Angelou was an American poet, activist, autobiographer, and storyteller. MayaAngelou birth name was Marguerite Johnson; she was born in St. Louis, Missouri. MayaAngelou has had an enormous career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and to be the firstfemale black director in Hollywood. Angelou was most famous as a writer, editor, play writer,and poet. Maya Angelou worked for Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X as a rights activistfor black people. She was also a teacher at the Reynolds professor of American studies at wakeforest University. In 1975, Maya Angelou wrote Carol E. Neubauer in Southern for blacks andwomen. She also served on two presidential committees, for Gerald Ford in 1975 and also forJimmy Carter in 1977. Angelou was also awarded the national medal of arts in 2000 by BillClinton. Later in 2010, Maya Angelou was awarded the presidential medal of freedom, thehighest award in the U.S. by President Obama. Overall in her lifetime, Maya Angelou has anoutstanding of 50 Honorary degrees.In 1969, Maya Angelou most famous work was “I know why the caged bird sings” thatspeaks about her early years in long beach, St. Louis where she lived with her brother andgrandmother. Maya spoke and described how she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend when shewas only seven years old. Maya Angelou’s abuser later was found murdered by Angelou’s uncle;Maya, unfortunately, blamed her self for what had happened and stopped talking for nearlyalmost her whole life. Maya Angelou stayed silent for five years but later started to develop alove for language. She started to read Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois and Paul LawrenceDunbar as well as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Around twelve years old, MayaAngelou educated black female teacher, Ms. Flowers, Finally motivated Maya to start backspeaking again. Mrs. Flowers taught Maya Angelou the importance of the spoken word andexplained the nature and the importance of her love in poetry. Maya Angelou graduated eighth-
