Pavlak 1 Jacob Pavlak Christine J Olding CRN: 40741 (Writing 1) Remember The Music Music is a very subjective topic within our lives. I have not always been a fan of the current music genre that is dominating our culture today. I respect the current music, and I do like some of the artists, but I believe rap is turning away from the message of which it was created for. Which was to break the suppression and racism which the black culture faced, it has become much less creative and much more commercialized as time goes on. The music genre which my heart lies, is rock. Classic rock, grunge, punk, alternative rock, and psychedelic rock have always been my favorites. My journey with rock music has been long, and I have taken a lot of shit for it, having people telling me “It’s just a stage”, but rock to me is more than just a stage. It’s a part of me and who I have become, with rock being a large deviation from the norm, it has helped me become the person I am today. Rock has been with me ever since I was born. I was first introduced to the music genre by my father. As a child, I remember listening to Bob Dylan’s album Blood On the Tracks. It was my dad’s favorite album, and currently still is to this day. Being introduced to such a creative artist at such a young age, has made me focus more on the lyrical aspects of music, and really helped me appreciate the writing of musicians. Not only has rock made me appreciate the lyrical aspects of songs, but the instrumentals as well. Listening to rock, I had such a variety of different sounds, it really made me respect the creativity behind every instrument in every song. Growing up in a household where, all is what I heard was Warren Zevon, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Bob Dylan was truly pretty fucking breathtaking. As I listened to musicians who were
Pavlak 2 either dead, dying, or sounded like shit when they currently perform, other kids were jumping on the trend of rap.
