The Declaration of Independence is defined as the formal statement written by Thomas Jefferson declaring the freedom of the thirteen American colonies from Great Britain. The fundamental document established the United States as a nation. It was adopted on July 4, 1776 and approved by continental congress. Prior to the declaration of independence, the united states of America were not a country, the individual states were all colonies of the British empire.
