Xiwen Lu Student ID: 20459574 S16 Co-Op Work Term Requirement REFLECTING ON LEADERSHIP IN THE WORKPLACE 1. Background During the past work term from May 2016 to August 2016, I worked in the internal audit department of LoyaltyOne as a staff auditor. LoyaltyOne is a Canadian marketing company whose main business is the Air Miles Program. My department reports to LoyaltyOne’s parent company, Alliance Data, which resides in the U.S. My team is made up of a group of six auditors among which three of them specialize in operational audit and the other two focus on IT audit. We also work closely with the audit teams of other line of businesses of Alliance Data when conducting audits across different subsidiaries. During each of the two audit engagements that I was involved in, a planning meeting was held with the senior leadership team of the department that was audited. Subsequently, employees that are manager or senior level attended the field work kick- off meeting where my team communicated the objectives and scope of the audit to those employees. To sum up, I have worked with five senior auditors within my department, a dozen senior auditors who are in the U.S., as well as managers and other employees from different departments. In the last half of this work term, I was in charge of conducting the field work of two audits that were also conducted across all subsidiaries of Alliance Data, namely the Corporate office, Epsilon and Card Services. The two audits were more challenging than the ones that only involve LoyaltyOne because our team need to coordinate with other audit teams to ensure that the sampling methodology, testing procedures, and documentation format are consistent. 2. Personal Core Values Prior to this work term, my personal credo was to live every day to its fullest. The reason I picked this quote to be my credo is because I think life is really short. Since I only have limited time in this life, I would like to use every second efficiently and eventually live a life that I will not regret living. When it comes to co-op, the limitation of time is more obvious as I often observe that after I start a new job, it takes me two to three weeks to settle in the new position. At the beginning of the term, I spend the most time asking questions, reading training materials and seeking help from my peers and seniors. After that time period, I start to be able to work more independently and think creatively as I become more familiar with the work. However, starting from that point, I will make mistakes in various areas, which 1

is partially due to my lack of experience. Subsequently, I will spend another months making mistakes and finally use the rest of my co-op term asking for feedbacks and fixing my mistakes. By the time I am finally confident in the position, my term comes to an end. Therefore, I think a four-month work term is really a short period of time in terms of developing my skills and demonstrating the development to my manager. Since time

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
