I have just been called to the scene of a homicide in an apartment building. The deceased is a young male who has been stabbed numerous times. The roommate of the deceased man is present in the room, his shirt is covered with blood, and there is a knife on the floor. Uniformed officers are guarding the door and the roommate. As the detective assigned to this scene I need to record my arrival time to the scene and the scenes location. It is also helpful to record the weather conditions and the lighting condition that day. My priority is to speak with the initial responding officer and find out what he has find out so far. The recording of the initial officer’s information is important. Recording the time the call was received, the time the officer arrived, and the officers name, ID number and unit number (Howell, 1999 p9). After interviewing him I then need to speak with any other officers that responded and documenting any actions they may have taken. This is to ensure that the integrity of the crime scene has been maintained and not contaminated. I would need to establish how large the crime scene area is and make sure that the scene is secure. A crime scene log would need to be kept so that I have documentation of all individuals that have been in the crime scene area. The initial officer should then be ready to transfer the crime scene control over to me.
