3 CHAPTER ONE At the end of this chapter the student should be able to:- 1. Organize study time 2. Design and equip the study location 3. Write adequate notes 4. Find helpful study materials. HOW TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY Introduction Bright and able students fail examinations and other assessments as a result of an inability to study effectively. The problem lies in their inability to organize their:- 1. Time 2. Location of study 3. Learning resources 4. Notes 5. Systematic approach to study 6. Poor listening ORGANIZING TIME Assign activities time in order of priorities Prepare a study timetable taking the following into consideration; exam dates, library hours, assignments and social events. Allow time to review lecture notes regularly and avoid last minute revision Keep a copy of the lecture timetable. A sample study timetable. Mon Tue Wed Thurs Fri Sat 8.30 -10.00 Lectures Pri study 10.13 -11.45 Lectures Study Lecture Free 1.00 -2.00 L U N C H 2.00-4.00 Study Lecture 4.00 6.00 Travel Gymn Study Travel LOCATION OF STUDY CHECKLIST Lighting Natural lighting is best. Do not position your desk so that you are studying in your own shadow. Avoid eyestrain from dazzling direct light. Heating overheated environment will make you sleepy. During cold weather keep yourself warm. Noise - some people can study in noisy environments while others prefer quietness. Whatever your preference seek to eliminate distracting noise. Interruptions arrange your self-study timetable so that you are guaranteed at least two hours of uninterrupted study time.

4 Your desk and chair- The height of your desk should allow you to write comfortably without causing your shoulder muscles to cramp and strain. The desk surface should be large enough to allow for several open books or files. An adjustable typist chair is recommended. TAKING NOTES DURING LECTURES This concerns taking summarized notes during lectures or seminars. Effective summarizing involves the following:- Making notes of speakers main points. Using own words as much as possible Should be written using headings, sub-headings and clear points. Principles of effective note taking. 1. Arrive on time before the lecturer. 2. Have writing materials ready. 3. Sit where you have a good view of board or screen. 4. Listen attentively. 5. Note the structure and main ideas of the lecture. 6. Ask lecturer for any explanation. LEARNING RESOURCES These include:- 1. Handouts 2. Lecture notes. 3. Library books 4. Videotapes and films. 5. Charts and graphs. 6. Computer database information.
