ASSIGNMENT UNIT 5 2 What constitutes freedom and liberty for all? For the Founding Fathers Liberty was not new but, like their symbol the Liberty Tree, deeply rooted and long established among them. By 1776 some families had been in America for over a century, and American Liberty was something they had always possessed. But what does “freedom and liberty” really mean to the 21st Century American Citizen, what did it mean to the Americans in rebellion against the British King, and what did it really mean for the slaves and indentured servants held in bondage throughout the American Colonies? The Founders talked about Liberty and Freedom as two separate but connected ideals. Both of these words contain the idea of possessing the ability to exercise one’s will, and a power to choose. To better understand these words we must first look at whom these men were, these mean
