Brian Wilson 746119 Hi 251 I read through the articles that discussed the varying opinions on race in the new world. Contrary to most everything that I had believed up to this point, the views on Native Americans, Africans and other races varied greatly. The letters written by John Smith and George Best both described their encounters with Native Americans and Africans. Smith wrote on the topic of Native Americans and how intriguing their culture was while also pointing out his criticisms. He did point out things that I had heard such as they were savages due somewhat to their attitude toward the British and the fact that they had strange ways of dressing. Best described the Africans as a group of really tan people who spent too much time in the sun, however they did finally realize after seeing the child of an African and an Englishman that it was “chemical” as they called it. He also mentioned that most of the English were repulsed by the thought of them, and had preferred no contact, especially not the thought of using them as slaves. Both of these letters or diary entries were written simply as observations.
