Exercise 2 – Investigating Photosynthesis1.Variable Light intensity 2.Research questionDoes the leaves of spinach photosynthesize faster at higher light intensity?3.Hypothesis The higher the light intensity, the higher the rate of photosynthesis. 4.Experimental design a)Equipment and materialsSodium bicarbonate solution Syringes Fresh leaves Clean water Timer Source of light Pen and paper b)Experimental design and Procedure 300 ml of 0.2% solution of sodium bicarbonate is prepared for the experiment. This is thesource of CO2 in solution. The bicarbonate solution is poured into clear plastic cups.A little soap is added to the solution to act as a surfactant for the leaf to sink.10 uniform leaf discs are cut using the hole puncher, while avoiding leaf veins.
The disks are poured into the solution containing sodium bicarbonate. The cup is placed under the light at a distance 1m from it, and timing done for 2hrs.
