A People’s History of the United States Name Neryssa Ureta Chapter Title: “Or Does It Explode?” Important People Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American minister leader who strived for civil rights through peaceful protests by achieving this through conventions throughout the South. He was known for his conference of asking crowds of individuals such as in the Black demographic to support the cause through a rise in voice. Angelo Herndon supported the Communist ideology in support of equal opportunity without discrimination for blacks. His views in support of Communism led to the arrest of in 1932 which would demonstrate his strong point of supporting a different system. President Harry Truman supported the civil rights movement by implementing the end to segregation in the military and providing laws to be place in order to bring general equality to racial discrimination. President Kennedy did very little to benefit the movement and was seen to avoid the situation by not intervening in federal aid to protect protesters. Malcolm X saw the general supporter who described the general atmosphere of the protest in Washington D.C, by the attitude and limitations which the leaders held during the event. Important Events In the 1960’s the “Freedom Rides” began to travel across states in order to demonstrate equality in races which led to violence to the bus riders and members of the protest to be arrested. The goal was to show the strength in racial integrity and to be able to stand beyond the societal norm to create a change. The Washington D.C. 1968 demonstration grew to a two hundred thousand supporters came together to hear speeches and grow attention of the desire for federal aid to help enforce anti-discrimination policies and laws that have been already placed.
