The beginning of the novel starts out with OrleannaPrice where she paints a scene from a future time, looking back at the memories of her and her family in the Congo. Through the use of this introduction in Orleanna’s perspective, Kingsolver familiarizes the audience with the themes of guilt and clash of culture, and the different perspectives people carry for Africa. As the mother of the four daughters in the Price family, Orleanna felt a sense of responsibility and duty that she had to carry. This may have been the reason for her tone of guilt and sorrow as she looks back at her somber memories with feelings of regret and desolation.
