Question 1. You have a mixture of a phenol and an ester. Describe in 3 sentences or less how to easily separate and isolate both compounds without using chromatography. Place your mixture in a separatory funnel along with an appropriate organic solvent (CH 2 Cl 2 , ether, etc.) and an aqueous phase above pH 12 (such as 1M NaOH). Shake and separate the layers. Concentration of the organic layer will yield the ester, and acidification followed by filtration will yield the phenol (as the solid filtrate). Question 2. From the following list of compounds: a) Draw a circle around the most acidic compound. b) Draw a square around the most basic compound. c) Put an "X" through the compound that will form a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone.
