Compare a character from Death of a Salesman and The Glass Menagerie. In ‘Death of a Salesman,’ Willy Loman is shown to be deluded and unhinged, while Amanda Wingfield of ‘The Glass Menagerie’ simply seems to long for the past. Willy has vivid hallucinations of a fantasy world in which his life is perfect and he is admired, while Amanda actually lived out her younger years being adored and sought after. She is nostalgic and often tells stories of her youth, as opposed to Willy who pathologically lies about his past and even his present life. Both characters have strained relationships with their two children, but it is obvious that while Willy’s children disdain him, which leads to horrible fights, Amanda’s children seem to genuinely love her even though they have fights of their own.
