Johanna Slotnick Comm. 410 Journal 8-12 Chapter 8 As the chapter discusses, employees can gain power in the workplace using many different traits and actions as stepping stones and power sources. I found interesting correlations between the book’s descriptions and Cornell Football when considering power gained from personal characteristics. Irreplaceable expertise and knowledge, along with skillful communication can create a strong source of power for the more experienced participants in the group. This is a prominent theme amongst the football team’s players. Leaders and the team captains find themselves in those positions due to their experience on the team and the skills they have proven to have in the game. Their knowledge of other school’s players and strategies, as well as their years of experience give them the edge needed to be confident and productive leaders. The image a speaker or leader presents of themselves are strong indicators of the amount of power people will “give” him/her. As this chapter points out, while the leader can modify their image, their image is the strongest persuasive tools they have to build power from, and will represent his/her values and beliefs. To become a Cornell Football captain the player must have a prominent, strong and determined image. Players need captains they can respect, trust and look up to. If the team had a captain with a weak image as his public self, the team would lose faith in his abilities as a leader, making them much less cohesive. The captain’s private self, or the self image the person has about himself, is also on display however when it comes to Cornell Football. Because the players share personal and “professional” lives on and off the field they can have a great deal of knowledge about each other. This means that the captains most generally must truly have the beliefs and values they present when involved in the organization, leading their image to be easier to maintain, but a person of their character harder to find. As the book describes, once employees learn what attributes are valued in their organization they can begin to act out those ideal characteristics and if (as mentioned earlier) they are close enough to the desired ideal they will not have too difficult a time becoming the type of person that may be promoted to a higher status. Similarly, players can learn the characteristics needed to be a leader amongst the team such as loyalty, strength, determination and courage and apply it to their involvement. Those who truly fit the descriptions and ideals will move up to leadership positions. Maintaining self image may include practices such as maintaining aesthetic appeal and practicing confident yet encouraging non verbal cues. Captains must be presentable (including physically fit and hygienic) and emotionally strong when representing the team in front of players, fans and media.
